downtown

"It was a time of many cliques and clans of affinity, extremely competitive and the notion of community was a dubious one as a careerism was rampant. For whatever reason, those of us who did work together felt that anything was possible. A visual artist such as Robert Longo could perform in a rock band, compose music and create spectacles for the theater. Arne Zana was a photographer and a dancer/choreographer. This was a time of theory and art-historical opinion. Many hours we would spend with concepts like: is originality dead? Is it possible to use a traditional medium like painting and be a serious artist? Mechanical and electronic reproduction were preferred media and film was the ultimate expression of the late Twentieth Century."
